Amicus welcomes opening of new learning centre

Trade union Amicus has welcomed the opening of a new Learning Centre at the Kimberly Clark Barrow Mill site in Cumbria.

Tony Burke, Assistant General Secretary of Amicus, who was involved in this week's opening ceremony, said, "I am delighted that Kimberly Clark at Barrow in Furness have committed to working with the trade unions on training and learning. This is a
fantastic opportunity not only to deliver on the Government's skills strategy agenda, but also to bring into the workplace a culture of lifelong learning."

Peter Taylor, the Kimberly Clark Mill Manager, said, "To be competitive in this increasing global economy, manufacturing must
focus on innovation providing products and services that are unique. Kimberly-Clark is focussed on this and a vast amount of money is spent by the Corporation annually on research and development.

"To deliver these products at the highest quality and lowest possible cost needs highly capable teams within the manufacturing facilities; teams that are well informed, skilled and motivated to maximise efficiency every minute of every day.

"The development of our people is key to achieving this, not just as an entry qualification but for on-going building of knowledge and skills. We believe our Open Learning Centre is a significant step in the direction of making access to lifelong learning easier."
