Roundtable to focus on skills in the Midlands

A group including employers, trade unions and community leaders will meet education minister Ivan Lewis in Birmingham today to discuss the skills challenge in the region.

Jointly organised by the New Statesman and Fellows’ Associates, with the support of the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and the European Social Fund, the meeting is the first in a series of five regional debates.

A feature based on the discussion will appear in the New Statesman following the event, and Fellows’ Associates will be publishing the edited transcripts. A further sixth event will be held in Manchester as a young people’s forum.

Kathy Sutton, Director at Fellows’ Associates, said, "The aim of these meetings is to challenge orthodoxy and drive forward solutions based on addressing challenges, working in partnership and securing inclusion. Effective collaboration in tackling this issue is absolutely essential as a better skills economy is crucial to economic success and social justice."
