BLA publishes guidelines on learner support (free download)

The British Learning Association (BLA) has published a new mini guide entitled "10 Steps to Develop Learner Support - a guideline through the key issues".

Commenting on the publication, Brian Merison, General Manager of the BLA and author of the guidelines said, "Learner support is a well used term but can mean many different things to different people. The different interpretations of the term depend in many ways on the context"

He added, "Many of the options for support are relatively new to practitioners and although there are a number of publications covering various aspects of support there remained a need to provide guidance on the development of learner support that are appropriate to the environments and context in which it is needed. We hope that this will be the first in a series of best practice guides from the BLA highlighting quality approaches to current key issues facing learning practitioners"

According to the BLA, the guidelines are designed to assist:

  • Managers of learning schemes wishing to develop support to learners
  • Providers of programmes and materials wishing to recommend support options to customers
  • Course designers who need to ensure that programmes are adequately supplied

The BLA document contains a step-by-step approach to learner support with a checklist at each stage that aims to help users develop a strategy for the review and development of learner support in the organisation.

Development of the guide was supported by S2-NET, a project funded through the Leonardo da Vinci Programme with the support of the European Commission, Directorate-General for Education and Culture.
