RSPB is top of the table

Nature lovers working for the RSPB across the country have voted the organisation Britain’s top wildlife conservation charity work place.

An FT Special Report, based on feedback from employee surveys and management questionnaires positions the Society 36 overall in the top 50 UK "Best Workplaces" for 2005.

Employee Sue Steptoe said: "The RSPB is a great charity to work for and an excellent employer, providing a host of opportunities for staff to develop new skills and broaden their experience.

"There’s always a new challenge around the corner and never time to get bored. And working in such superb surroundings makes it a joy to come to work each day. I even get to see my favourite birds - long-tailed tits - flitting from tree to tree outside my office window."

The RSPB is one of Europe’s largest wildlife conservation organisations and employs more than 1,440 staff spanning UK headquarters, three national offices, nine regional offices and 182 nature reserves. The work of the organisation is also supported by 9,000 volunteers.

Anne Harley, the RSPB’s director of human resources, said: "We’re delighted to be the top wildlife conservation charity work place and obviously even happier that the comments of our valued staff in all areas across the UK have earned us this position.

"As part of a large organisation, it would be easy to fall into the trap of thinking you’re doing the best for your staff so it’s great to get this impartial view and to know we are doing many things well. We will obviously continue to improve things."

Issues covered during the survey included employer’s approach, workplace practices, office environment and facilities as well as general morale.
