Young LGV driver scheme delivers award winner

Skills for Logistics has announced that Heidi Rushmer has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Carmen Apprentice of the Year Award.

Heidi, aged 19, converted a keen interest in trucks into the first step of a career as a driver when she discovered Skills for Logistics Young LGV Driver Scheme (YDS).

Ian Hetherington, Chief Executive, Skills for Logistics, said: "As one of 21 females participating on the Young LGV Driver Scheme Heidi has demonstrated a strong commitment and willingness to learn. It is important that more young people, particularly young women consider careers within logistics.

“We are all aware of the current driver shortages and acute lack of women drivers in the industry and we are keen to ensure that the industry addresses the imbalance," he concluded.

Heidi was trained by Norfolk Training Services and has gained her Category C licence. She has also completed her Level 2 NVQ Driving Large Goods Vehicles. Heidi now drives for the family business, Rushmer Ltd.

"It is fantastic to receive this kind of recognition for doing something that I love to do," said Heidi. "Ever since I was a child I wanted to get involved in driving LGVs. I really enjoy being on the road for long stretches and meeting up with other drivers at the truck stops and to get a qualification too is really fantastic."

Skills for Logistics is the Sector Skills Council for the freight logistics industries. Its programmes include the Young LGV Driver Scheme and the Scottish Driver Training Scheme as well as Apprenticeships for a wide range of occupations across the sector.
