Skills for Care appoints new Chair

Skills for Care's new Chair from October 2005 will be Donald Hoodless who is stepping down as Chief Executive of Circle 33 Housing Group this summer.

He was one of five candidates short listed by Skills for Care, the Sector Skills Council for adult social care in England.

Learning of his appointment, Mr Hoodless said: "I am very pleased to accept Skills for Care's invitation to be its Chair. My career in social housing has made me well aware both of the importance of social care, and of the centrality of workforce development in delivering high quality person-centred services.

"I am looking forward to working with Skills for Care members and their constituencies, and with the organisation's staff, and to representing their interests through the Skills for Care and Development Sector Skills Council."

Mr Hoodless is 62 and lives in Islington, London, where he was a borough councillor for 14 years, including a year as leader of the council.

Skills for Care's current Chair, Arthur Keefe, who retires in October, said: "I am very pleased that the Skills for Care board has chosen Donald to be its new Chair. Having been in the Chair since we began as Topss England in 1998,

"I am sure the time is right for me to move on, but I shall continue to take a great interest in the progress of the hugely important work of social care's workforce development. Donald's experience in care-related housing means he will bring new insights from a different but closely related field, which will enrich the work of Skills for Care and the quality of care which it supports."

The Skills for Care board is led by social care employer representatives, and also includes training providers, staff associations, service user and informal carer representatives.
