John Earls, research section head at the trade union Amicus has joined the board of the Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC).

The board of the Financial Services Skills Council is chaired by the group chief executive of Legal & General, Sir David Prosser, and includes directors of banks and building societies as well as representatives from trade unions and HM Treasury.

John Earls said: "The work completed by the sector skills council during its first year of operation is something that I have been following with particular interest. I am thrilled to be helping the FSSC build upon their excellent work to date and look forward to the challenges ahead as skills issues are pushed to the top of the industry's agenda."

Teresa Sayers, chief executive of the FSSC, said: "John brings to the board a rich and diverse knowledge of the financial services industry. John's background in industry research and his experience of working within financial services unions will be invaluable as the FSSC continues to represent the views of employers across the sector."

Prior to his appointment at Amicus, Earls worked at the finance sector trade union, UNIFI, as joint head of research. He is a member of the Financial Services Authority's Advisory Group on financial capability and also its working group looking at delivery through the workplace. Earls is also a member of the commissioning panel for the Economic and Social Research Council's e-society research programme.
