Skills for Justice announces first recipients of new quality mark

Skills for Justice, the sector skills council for the justice sector, has announced the first recipients of its new quality mark, which aims to drive up standards of learning in the sector.

According to Skills for Justice, Skillsmark endorses specific learning providers and programmes to enable employers and staff working within the UK justice system to make informed choices about the training they undertake.

Lesley Dunlop, director of research and development at Skills for Justice said: "Whether we're talking about police officers, drugs workers, prison officers - in fact any of the 500,000 Justice sector staff - the requirement is the same - they all need excellent standards of training. Skillsmark signposts people to the most effective learning and development programmes on the market."

National charity Victim Support is among the first group of Skillsmark-recognised organisations. As part of the two-tier Skillsmark system they have been awarded the status of 'recognised provider'.

Alison Dixey, training manager at Victim Support, was part of the team that put together their submission. She said: "We're thrilled to have attained Skillsmark - it's a badge of quality that will be recognised and respected throughout the sector. It's a great coup for our organisation and for the community justice sector generally."

The first learning providers to be recognised as achieving Skillsmark criteria are:

  • Broxtowe College - Department of Higher Education
  • John Grieve Centre for Policing and Community Safety
  • Canterbury Christ Church University - Department of Crime and Policing Studies
  • Midlands Probation Consortium - NVQ Assessment Centre
  • Victim Support - National Office Training Department

Skills for Justice expect to be able to announce a further group of recognised providers in the coming weeks. They say that the next step for these providers will be to submit specific learning programmes, and if they meet the Skillsmark criteria, these will then be badged as 'Skillsmark-endorsed'.
