The sector skills council reports that the programme has delivered a pass rate of 54% - the average completion rate for Apprenticeships is 30% The scheme, which has just ended in England, was established to provide a structured training programme for potential LGV drivers aged 25 or over. In addition to the candidate gaining either a full Category C licence or an upgrade to a Category C+E licence, it provides them with a Level 2 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Driving Goods Vehicles. Ian Hetherington, chief executive at Skills for Logistics, said: "We are thrilled with the high pass rates of the Logistics Skills Award and aim to build on the achievements of the programme. We have learnt lessons from the Award and will ensure that future initiatives incorporate the positive elements of the scheme, for example key aspects have already been included in Skills for Logistics latest initiative the Experience Booster." Another of the organisation’s initiatives is the Young LGV Driver Scheme which has just under 1,500 young people embarking on the programme to become the LGV drivers of the future. “With a current shortage of 46,000 it is vital that young people are encouraged into the industry and the Young LGV Driver Scheme has accomplished this,” concluded Ian Hetherington.
