New National Occupational Standards for retail sector

Sector skills council Skillsmart Retail has launched new National Occupational Standards (NOS) for the retail sector.

Angela Roberts, Standards Manager at Skillsmart Retail, said: "National Occupational Standards are the blueprints which guide the standard of training courses and qualifications. They describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function.

"The retail NOS provide the standard of competence for the sector and underpin its qualifications. Employers can use them to design, deliver and evaluate training and identify individual development needs."

Skillsmart Retail says the revised retail NOS were approved in all four UK nations and have been printed in Welsh for the first time.

It's expected that National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) and Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) units will be developed from the retail NOS by the end of January 2006.

The retail NOS form part of the newly launched online directory of UK National Occupational Standards.

The directory contains information on occupational standards produced by the Skills for Business network and other standards setting bodies.

Users can search the directory by keyword, by the SSC/standards setting body responsible for the standards, by the appropriate sector or industry, or by the name of the suite of standards.
