Recruitment & training centre to open at Canary Wharf

Canary Wharf Group has announced that it is to work with local organisations to set up the Canary Wharf Recruitment & Training Centre.

The centre is designed to be a one-stop shop for employers in Canary Wharf and Tower Hamlets to address their training and recruitment needs.

In setting up the centre, Canary Wharf Group (CWG) will be working in partnership with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets (LBTH), Tower Hamlets College, East London Business Alliance and OCS. The centre will be located at Heron Quays, Canary Wharf.

CWG says the Canary Wharf Recruitment & Training Centre will be a dedicated space for employers, ranging from large investment banks to local organisations, to interview and train new recruits. It will also allow employers to 'sell' their industry to local school leavers through organised events.

The new venue will focus on recruiting and training in the banking & finance, hospitality, hotel & leisure, security and property support services sectors. According to CWG, job seekers will continue to be initially screened at local community venues and those successful will attend training directly linked to job opportunities at the centre.

The centre will be run by an employment consortium 'Employment Solutions' and will include the Union of Construction and Allied Trades/Lewisham College Learning Centre that provides work related training for trade union learners.

George Iacobescu, Chief Executive, Canary Wharf Group said: "Delivering supply and demand through this new centre will raise the profile and volume of work already successfully undertaken by the Partnership and I am delighted Canary Wharf has been able to donate this building and continue to support local people into areas of job growth."

Tower Hamlets lead councillor for regeneration and community partnerships, Shafiqul Haque, said: "This is a positive step in the regeneration of the borough through the Local Development Framework. The benefits to the local community will be far reaching from now until 2016. The Centre is a fine example of how community partnerships can make a huge difference in creating training opportunities and employment for local people."

The members of the 'Employment Solutions' consortium running the centre are: Tower Hamlets Council, Tower Hamlets College, Education Business Partnership, Jobcentre Plus, Poplar HARCA and East London Business Alliance.

Chris Cracknell, chief executive of OCS said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for OCS to get further involved in recruiting and employing local people within Canary Wharf and the surrounding area. Our industry relies heavily on the quality of our staff, and therefore recruitment, training and staff retention are areas that we take very seriously. We are very proud to be part of this facility and this service."

It's expected that the Canary Wharf Recruitment & Training Centre will be fully operational by the end of the year, with a launch planned for the New Year.
