Proskills launches in Scotland

Allan Wilson MSP, deputy minister for enterprise and lifelong learning, attended the recent launch in Scotland of Proskills, Sector Skills Council for the process and manufacturing industries.

Speaking at the launch, Terry Watts, Proskills CEO said: "Scotland has a tradition of industrial innovation and a wealth of home-grown talent. However, the many Scottish SMEs which are becoming increasingly 'high tech' need to keep their skills fresh if they are to remain competitive in today's global economy.

"Proskills is offering employers the opportunity to have a really effective voice in determining what training should be provided and how it should be delivered. We are therefore urging employers in the process and manufacturing sectors to get involved. Proskills is your SSC and your opportunity to change the future."

To help ensure it keeps a strong focus on issues in Scotland, Proskills has appointed Paul Coffey as national manager for Scotland.

Coffey and his colleagues are working on a number of projects, including the "Promoting Workplace Learning" project, which aims to demonstrate to employers how developing their staff can make a real contribution to increased productivity and quality. The Scottish Executive is providing funding for this project across all Sector Skills Councils in Scotland.

Richard Bird, executive officer of British Aggregates, who is a member of Proskills Scottish Nation Group, said: "Training is a really important issue for our industry sector's workforce. Active involvement in Proskills gives our members the opportunity to really influence the direction of training provision both in Scotland and across the UK."

As the Sector Skills Council for the process and manufacturing industries, Proskills works in the following sectors: paint and coatings, extractives, glass, building products and print.
