FSSC seeks views on foundation degrees

The Financial Services Skills Council (FSSC) has launched a consultation process to seek the views of the industry on its new foundation degree framework for financial services.

The FSSC says they developed the draft framework working closely with industry representatives from banking, insurance, financial advice and investment, as well as further education colleges, universities and training providers.

Foundation degrees are higher education qualifications that are designed to combine academic study with work based learning and experience.

The new framework aims to provide a coherent blueprint for the development and delivery of relevant foundation degrees for financial services.

The FSSC says the blueprint is based on employer requirements in terms of knowledge and skills across the industry and will guide providers in developing foundation degrees that are appropriate to employers' needs.

FSSC research in 2004/5 found that whilst awareness of foundation degrees was low, once employers understood more about them there was an appetite for such a qualification.

"Employer reactions were encouraging and there was enthusiasm for using foundation degrees to help develop staff into more senior managerial roles," says Lucy Courtenay, FSSC standards & accreditation director. "One of the biggest attractions is the flexible way they can be delivered, which minimises disruption and down time. Employers also value the potential for customisation by using the research project component to deliver specific business and service improvements."

The foundation degree framework consultation period will last until 7 July 2006. The consultation document is available via www.fssc.org.uk and the FSSC is inviting views by email, telephone or face-to-face interview, or through attendance at round table discussion meetings.
