Spectator safety standards approved

SkillsActive has announced that the updated level 3 and 4 National Occupational Standards (NOS) for spectator safety have this week been approved and are now available for use in new and existing qualifications.

NOS in spectator safety, first introduced in the mid-1990s following the Bradford and Hillsborough disasters, were part of a range of measures aimed at raising levels of safety and welfare for spectators at all types of sporting events.

To date, the standards have been used to underpin qualifications at various levels, including higher education courses, and foundation degrees.

The standards are also used by many who provide stewarding at spectator events. SkillsActive, the Sector Skills Council for active leisure and learning, says the standards are used as benchmarks of good practice, while offering realistic targets for training.

Chief Executive of the Football Licensing Authority John de Quidt said: "We welcome the approval of these updated standards and the opportunity for us to work closely with SkillsActive and industry colleagues on this major step forward in training to underpin crowd safety."

Stuart Copus, product manager for spectator safety at City & Guilds, welcomed the updated standards: "Quality is of paramount importance where public safety is concerned and that this is best assessed through demonstrating competence in the workplace.

"City & Guilds strongly believes that the NVQ in spectator safety is the benchmark in quality, and will ensure safer spectator environments for all for many years to come. We will continue to offer the new level 2 NVQ in spectator safety, based upon these new updated standards."

SkillsActive says it worked with a number of key partners from across sport and other industry regulators, including awarding bodies offering awards and qualifications based on the NOS, to ensure the new standards represent current best practice in stewarding and spectator safety.
