Unionlearn to launch in the South West

Unionlearn, the TUC's new initiative that aims to improve workers' skills, will be launched in the South West next week.

Liz Smith, the unionlearn director, will address more than 120 learners at a conference in Cornwall on June 29, 2006.

Unionlearn replaces the TUC's Learning Services and Trade Union Education. It was set up to provide a single body for trade union members seeking to improve their employability and quality of life through learning new skills. These skills include IT, literacy and numeracy, and foreign languages. Unionlearn also trains more than 2,500 workplace reps a year.

Liz Smith unionlearn director said: "unionlearn is about creating strong unions for the future.

"Our goal is to become the centre of excellence for supporting high quality-led learning activity by helping unions put learning and skills at their heart of their organising agenda."

Regional manager Helen Cole said: "unionlearn is an exciting new development designed to take us forward and consolidate the excellent learning work that unions are undertaking on the behalf of the 600,000 members in the South West.

"We'll continue to organise events across the region for networking, development and information purposes."

Cornwall development officer Geoff Hale said: "I'm very excited that Liz has chosen to hold the launch down here because unions and learners in the county have achieved excellent results and are looking forward to real progress in raising the skills of the Cornish workforce."

The conference, which starts at 10.30am, will also hear from the TUC's senior policy officer Iain Murray, and Rob Corfield, area director of Devon and Cornwall Learning and Skills Council.
