Yorkshire Freight Skills Forum gets September launch

The Road Haulage Association is launching a Freight Skills Forum in the Yorkshire and Humber region on 12 September 2006 at Pontefract Racecourse.

The event, organised in conjunction with Skills for Logistics and supported by the Freight Transport Association, will include presentations about the Skills Group; the emerging Sector Skills Agreement that has been developed by Skills for Logistics; and the implementation of the EU Directive on the HGV Drivers' Certificate of Professional Competence.

The event aims to bring together employers, training providers, funding agencies and any other party that has an interest in skills issues in logistics.

The event has been organised by a Skills Group that was established as part of a Regional Freight Strategy, jointly developed by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Assembly, the Government Office for Yorkshire and Humber and Yorkshire Forward (sponsors of the Skills Forum Launch).

Geoff Dunning, regional director of the Road Haulage Association and chair of the Skills Group, said: "The launch of the Freight Skills Forum is a major step in addressing skills issues in the Logistics sector in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.

"The Forum will encourage widespread exchange of information between all interested parties, and will promote the sector as a career opportunity.

"The industry faces many challenges in the next few years, and the Forum will seek to ensure that people with the right skills are available to all types and sizes of employer."

David Orrell, regional manager for Skills for Logistics, added: "With our emerging Logistics Skills Agreement, the work of the Regional Freight Skills group will underpin the progress that we need to make in Yorkshire and Humber to enable logistic employers to develop their teams delivering top quality service to all sectors of the regional economy."
