Skills Minister meets creative industries employers

Skills Minister Phil Hope MP has attended a board meeting of Creative & Cultural Skills, the sector skills council for the creative and cultural industries.

During the meeting Mr Hope heard about the range of initiatives being developed to improve education and training for the sector and took time out to meet young designers working at Conran Design Group, which played host to the meeting.

Creative & Cultural Skills chief executive Tom Bewick said: "We're very pleased that the Minister could join us for a wide-ranging discussion on our key programmes. He has been an extremely supportive Minister of our work since formally granting our licence in July 2005.

"He recognises that we are involved in a number of groundbreaking initiatives such as Creative Apprenticeships, the Cultural Leadership Programme, proposals for National Skills Academies and Creative Knowledge Lab - our innovative new service to provide much better careers advice and guidance to the creative and cultural industries."

Chaired by Tony Hall, chief executive of the Royal Opera House, the board of Trustees of Creative & Cultural Skills includes senior representatives from a wide range of organisations in the sector.

Mr Hope said: "In establishing the 25 Sector Skills Councils, the government has sought to put employers firmly in charge of skills development for their respective industries. So an important measure of each SSC's achievement will be the extent to which leading employers are engaged in that process. I'm impressed by the calibre of Trustees attracted by Creative & Cultural Skills and the way in which each industry within a highly diverse and contrasting sector is fully represented."
