New spectator safety qualification launched

City & Guilds has launched a new version of its spectator safety qualification.

The Level 2 NVQ in Spectator Safety covers accidents and emergencies, crowd monitoring, dealing with incidents, and conflict management.

Stuart Copus, manager of spectator safety awards at City & Guilds, said: "The football industry is increasingly aware of the effect of spectator behaviour and the key importance of audience safety within football stadia.

"Dealing with the movements of crowds and managing potential conflicts during a match should not be taken lightly. We cannot afford to compromise on the quality of safety regulation training. It's important to get it right from the start - especially since the public's safety and well-being are concerned.

According to research carried out in 2005 by City & Guilds, more than a third (37 per cent) of customer-facing Britons were verbally abused whilst at work. One in six (16 per cent) were threatened and a further seven per cent were physically abused by a member of the public. City & Guilds says knowing how to cope with such behaviour is vital for football stewards and that this will be covered in the new qualification.

Copus added: "Spectator control is not only important for football matches, but also for other sports and large-scale events, in particular the impending 2012 London Olympics. We strongly believe that our new NVQ in Spectator Control is the benchmark in quality, and hope it will ensure safer spectator environments for many years to come."
