During his visit, the minister met a few of the 700 plus Merseytravel employees who have benefited from Merseylearn. Neil Scales, chief executive and director general of Merseytravel, said: "We are constantly striving for ways to encourage the personal and professional development of our staff as a way of improving our business. "We are delighted that Phil Hope took time to see Merseylearn and learn more about how we are pioneering new ways to do that." "Merseytravel can only be as good as the people who work for us. That's why, learning and development is part of the Merseytravel ethic and that's why we are investing so much in its success." The Minister met representatives from the other key partners of the Merseylearn project, including Knowsley Community College, GoSkills the Sector Skills Council for Passenger Transport, the Learning and Skills Council and Connexions. Councillor Mark Dowd, chair of Merseytravel welcomed the visit. He said: "For the Under Secretary of State to come and see what we are doing with Merseylearn is a huge positive for the project, which is quite rightly attracting major national attention. "We know Phil's department is seeking ideas about a powerful new skills and careers service and we have one in Merseylearn that we hope will help shape his thinking."
