Home > News > June 2004 > 01-Jun-2004 New QCA board members announcedEducation and Skills Secretary Charles Clarke has announced the appointment of Clare Chapman to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. This appointment will take effect on 1 October 2004. Clare Chapman is Group Human Resources Director at Tesco. Prior to joining Tesco Clare worked overseas in the USA and Europe. She was an HR Vice President at PepsiCo and had numerous HR and change roles in both the UK and Chicago USA, for Quaker Oats. Mr Clarke also announced the re-appointment to the Board of Edward Gould (currently Master, Marlborough College) and Nick Stuart (Chairman, National Institute of Adult and Continuing Education). These appointments will take effect from 31 May 2004. All appointments are for three years. Mr Clarke said: "I am pleased to make these appointments which will strengthen still further the QCA Board and its ability to lead the work of the Authority." QCA Chairman, Sir Anthony Greener, said: "Edward Gould and Nick Stuart have already made a significant contribution to QCA and I am very pleased that they have agreed to be reappointed. I am delighted that Clare Chapman will join the Board; her past experience in personnel management and training, together with her current position at Tesco will bring real hands-on knowledge of the training needs of employers and employees, and best practice in meeting those needs." QCA was set up under the Education Act 1997 as a non-departmental public body appointed by, and accountable to, the Secretary of State. It has responsibilities in the areas of the school curriculum (including the foundation stage), and all aspects of assessment, including external vocational and academic qualifications. It is required to conduct its business with a view to promoting quality and coherence in education and training. The current Board comprises: Chairman, Sir Anthony Greener, currently Chairman UFI Ltd and Deputy Chairman, BritishTelecom; Deputy Chairman, Mr Richard Greenhalgh, Chairman Unilever UK; Chief Executive, Dr Ken Boston; Mike Beasley, Business Consultant; Jenny Fitton, Principal, Taunton's College, Southampton; Helen Gilchrist, Principal, Bury College; Edward Gould, Master, Marlborough College; Sue Kirkham, Head Teacher, Walton High School; Jim Rose, Education
