In brief...

The Chartered Management Institute unveils its new President

Sir Paul Judge has been elected as the new President of the Chartered Management Institute, in succession to Gordon Page. He becomes the organisation's 29th President since it was founded as the British Institute of Management in 1947.

"I have always believed that the education and development of leaders and managers is of paramount importance to all UK organisations" said Sir Paul. "I am particularly delighted and honoured to serve as President of the Chartered Management Institute when management and enterprise are both high on the Government's agenda. It is an exciting time to be able to contribute to raising awareness of this globally competitive world and of the essential need for this country to improve even further the quality and effectiveness of its management teams."

In his role as President of the Chartered Management Institute, he will be supported by President-elect, David Varney, Chairman of HM Revenue and Customs, since May 2004.

The Chartered Management Institute has 74,000 individual members and 480 corporate members.

Accountancy bodies announce consolidation plans

Three of the leading UK accountancy bodies have announced plans for strategic consolidation.

The proposals aim to bring together the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) to create an organisation that covers the business, practice and public sectors.

The new organisation would have 200,000 members and a student base from a wide range of countries.

Existing members of all three bodies will be entitled to keep their current designatory letters and titles. Individual routes to qualification will be preserved during the post-consolidation transition. Any future changes to these qualifications would be subject to a three-quarter majority of the Governing Council of the new body.

Strategic consolidation has so far received an ‘in principle' yes from each of the governing Councils of the three Institutes. Formal proposals will be put to Councils in December with resolutions expected to be put to the members of all three bodies early to mid 2005. Subject to a positive mandate, permission will then be sought for a new Royal Charter.
