The Awards were created with the aim of recognising, encouraging and supporting best practice within employers' career development programmes. BCS chief executive, David Clarke, believes such initiatives are vital to improving the image of the IT profession. "In line with the BCS's current objective to ensure that IT practitioners are regarded the same status as other professions, such as accountants or lawyers, it is essential that praise and recognition is bestowed on those organisations who are championing this cause. "Furthermore, if organisations invest in their IT staff by encouraging career progression and developing IT skills and expertise, this can only have a positive effect on raising standards of best practice and professionalism throughout the entire IT industry. "Deloitte and West Dunbartonshire Council demonstrated unrivalled commitment to staff development and impressed the judging panel with their enthusiasm, dedication and IT professionalism and so their Awards are truly deserved." To be eligible for a Professional Development Award, organisations must operate either a BCS-accredited in-house career development scheme or a package such as BCS Career Developer. BCS Career Developer is designed to monitor employees' career progress and highlight areas where training may be required. Deloitte and West Dunbartonshire Council received their awards, for Best Established Scheme and Best Newly Implemented Scheme respectively, at the 2005 BCS IT Professional Awards ceremony held last week at the London Hilton Park Lane.
