New Qualification for IT Service Managers

The Information Systems Examinations Board (ISEB) of the British Computing Society (BCS) has launched a new qualification aimed at IT Service Managers. The Service Managers Practitioners Certificate will offer existing IT Service Management Certificate holders and others professionals a range of IT Service Management disciplines including Change Management, Service Level Management, Service Desk/Incident Management and Problem Management.

The new qualification, which sits between the existing ISEB Certificates at Foundation and Manager Levels, will offer experienced people the chance to get formal qualifications, and give a progression route for those building their careers in IT Service Management.

Initially six areas will be available to specialise in; the first three from March 2003 will be Change Management, Problem Management and Service Level Management, and from June 2003, Service Desk/Incident, Release Management and Configuration Management will be available.

Accredited training courses leading to the qualification will require students to undertake an assignment, a case-study and will culminate with a two hour exam.

Chair of the ISEB IT Service Management Board Maggie Kneller, explains the benefits of the qualification, "This new qualification gives managers the confidence that their employees will be able to carry out Service Management best practice, helping to increase effectiveness and reduce cost. It provides ISEB with a strong suite of Service Management qualifications, based around ITIL Best Practice."
