Council embarks on training drive

Over 2,000 Derbyshire County Council frontline and support staff are receiving IT training as part of a £100,000 scheme to promote effective use of information technology in the workplace.

Derbyshire County Council is working with IT learning and development company Equation to improve the IT skills of the Authority's operational staff - from care assistants to planning officers and support workers. The training is part of Derbyshire County Council's 'Putting People First' change management programme that aims to improve public services and maximise the use of its IT systems across the County.

The customised courses, which began in May 2004 and are provided at various venues across the county, cover the use of basic IT applications as well as the Internet and email.

"A significant number of our operational staff have been attending training courses to develop and improve their IT skills to ensure they are up-to-date and able to use the Council's software applications," said Councillor Joyce Sanders, cabinet member for service effectiveness. "As PCs become an essential tool to providing services to our citizens, it is important that we continue to invest in high quality IT training."

Dawn Meakin, Managing Director of Equation, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner for Learning Solutions, added: "We're delighted to be working with Derbyshire County Council, particularly to help those who are new to using computers and find the uptake of new software daunting. We've developed a customised training programme to ensure that the Council's staff have a consistent level of IT knowledge."
