'The Global Digital Literacy Challenge: a call to Action' is the theme of a symposium that aims to facilitate communication between corporate technologists and education policy creators in Government and NGO's in order to outline a clear way forward. Geoff McMullen, president of CEPIS and a ECDL-F board director, will be chairing the symposium which is to take place at Windsor Castle. Around 25-30 people are expected to attend representing industry, government, EU, NGOs and Academia. They will discuss digital literacy and how an international stakeholder network can be established to ensure that the right skills strategies are in place to match the rate of advancement in technology that is impacting on the global village. McMullen, a former president of the British Computer Society, said: "If we can follow the track record established by CEPIS and ECDL-F in establishing an internationally recognised IT training and qualification programme through the highly successful ECDL, there is every reason to believe that a similar programme could be achieved on a global basis within the next ten years. "Global digital literacy is of vital importance for the progression of mutual human understanding, for the interaction between people and their respective governments and as the core to efficient and rewarding communication in both the workplace and at home. We are also likely to witness within just a few years the majority of the world's population becoming users of IT. Ensuring that the continuing spread of information systems is adopted and used wisely and skilfully is of paramount importance to all of the world's societies."
