UK business leaders vote for their cabinet dream team

Over a thousand business leaders voted for their dream Government cabinet in a survey by the organisers of the Leaders in London 2005 conference.

Sir Richard Branson was the overwhelming favourite for the job of Prime Minister, with nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of the vote.

The most popular choices for cabinet positions included:

  • Philip Green - Chancellor of the Exchequer
  • Sir Alan Sugar - Transport Secretary.
  • Peter Kenyon - Culture, Media & Sport Secretary.
  • Sir Terence Conran - Deputy PM
  • Dame Anita Roddick - Health Secretary
  • Rupert Murdoch - Foreign Secretary
  • Lord Browne - Defence Secretary
  • Sir Terry Leahy - Trade & Industry Secretary
  • Michael Grade - Education Secretary
  • Sir Martin Sorrell - Work & Pensions Secretary

The 2005 ‘Leaders in London’ leadership summit will take place at The Barbican on 18th and 19th October 2005.

Among the speakers confirmed by the organisers are former President of the Soviet Union and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mikhail Gorbachev; author Tom Peters; the 42nd President of the USA Bill Clinton; former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright; Royal Mail Chairman Allan Leighton; explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes O.B.E; Chairman of 3i and former head of the Prime Minister’s Policy unit from 1990-1995 Baroness Sarah Hogg; and former board director at Pepsi, IPC magazines and Marks & Spencer Ren Carayol. Each of the speakers will deliver an address focusing on a particular aspect of leadership.

Ren Carayol said of the survey findings: "I think most of the leadership figures have been appropriately cast in a cabinet position that matches their industry and leadership expertise. The ‘Leaders in London’ survey just goes to show how inspirational the leaders of many of the UK’s top FTSE companies are and demonstrates the confidence that their peers in the industry have in their ability to lead, whether it be a company or country."
