The Effective Management Programme is to be run by Cranfield School of Management and is aimed primarily at the county's early-stage small businesses. The programme is part-funded by the European Social Fund, administered through the LSC. Its aim is to help smaller independent businesses develop workforce skills through improved management and leadership. The programme will include modules in strategy, marketing, finance and people management. David Molian, co-director of Cranfield School of Management's Credo Centre, said: "We know from working with the SME sector for almost 20 years that investment in their own management and business skills is not always a top priority, so this programme will help re-dress the balance. "The programme will enable the managers of smaller, younger businesses whom we do not normally reach to develop as leaders - and as people. Not only will they learn from the management experts delivering the programme, but they will learn from the other participants, sharing ideas, problems and solutions. "Finding a budget for management training can also prove a big challenge for micro-enterprises, so we are delighted that the Learning and Skills Council is providing funding for the programme, which in turn will help Bedfordshire businesses and, in the long term, the local economy." The first Essential Management Programme will take place in November 2006, followed by two further presentations during June and November 2007. Each programme will run over four days, with a break of two weeks between each two-day session. Cranfield says the only cost to participants is an overnight stay at the Cranfield Management Development Centre on the Cranfield campus.
