Designed for members of the Senior Civil Service (SCS) at Assistant Director level two years into post, the programme aims to help participants to develop and apply their leadership skills in direct response to real organisational challenges, and to the issues confronting the public service as a whole. Themes covered include impact and self-awareness, leading people and teams, organisational culture, service delivery from the citizen's point of view, and strategy and implementation. The programme is typically completed over a 12-15 month period. National School programme director Dr Winston Sutherland said: "We've designed the programme to allow those involved to step back from the everyday pressure and rethink their approaches to leadership while gaining powerful new personal and organisational perspectives. "Good leadership is central to the push for Professional Skills for Government, and we're confident that when our participants leave us they will take with them tools, techniques and behaviours that significantly increase their effectiveness as leaders." The National School of Government says applications for the Advanced Leadership Programme must be received by the end of November 2006.
