Fire & Rescue Services launch National Leadership Programme

With a keynote speech from Parmjit Dhanda, parliamentary under secretary of state at the Department for Communities and Local Government, the Fire & Rescue Services have launched their National Leadership Programme.

The programme supports a four year development strategy and aims to foster the effective development of leadership across all levels and in all sectors within the Fire Service.

Parmjit Dhanda, the minister with responsibility for fire and rescue, said: "A modern Fire and Rescue Service needs a leadership and development structure that grows highly capable leaders and managers.

"The National Leadership Programme will promote effective and appropriate leadership behaviours throughout the Fire and Rescue Services and support the drive to embed good equality and diversity practice."

The launch event was attended by chairs of Fire Authorities, chief fire officers, chief executives, HR directors and other senior officials from across the country.

Gill Newton, chief executive of the Fire Service College, said: "The Service needs to nurture and develop its best talent to prepare future leaders and this programme will ensure the very highest standards of leadership and equality of opportunity across the Fire and Rescue Services."

The National Leadership Programme includes the Executive Leadership Programme, developed by the Centre for Leadership in partnership with Warwick Business School and the National School of Government. The Executive Leadership Programme is to go live in January 2008.

Councillor Les Byrom of the Local Government Association said: "A modern world class fire service needs to identify its leaders of tomorrow and invest in their training and development. The LGA is committed to providing this top level training and experience to keep us as a world class service."
