Creative & Cultural Skills welcomes government paper

Creative & Cultural Skills, the sector skills council for the creative and cultural industries, has welcomed the publication of 'Creative Britain: New Talents for the New Economy' – the government strategy on the creative industries.

Tom Bewick, chief executive of Creative & Cultural Skills, said: "When the Minister for Skills, David Lammy, came to launch our second round of Creative Apprenticeship trials in December 2007, we announced our ambition to place up to 1,000 apprentices. Now the government is pledging to create 5,000 creative apprenticeships per year by 2013, and we will work hard with them and with industry to make sure this happens.

"This is going to be a very challenging ambition to meet. It will require a huge employer-led campaign across the creative industry, backed by government resources, to change the pattern and culture of recruitment into industry which is predominantly at the graduate level.

"However, these apprenticeships will be crucial for meeting skills needs, unleashing real talent into our industries, and crucially diversifying our workforce. We strongly support the government's renewed commitment to apprenticeships. All this effort is working towards making our industries and the UK the creative hub of the world."

The Strategy also highlights the development of an industry-led National Skills Academy for Backstage and Offstage skills. This work is being carried out by the Design Skills Alliance - a partnership between Creative & Cultural Skills, The Design Council and other figures of the design industry world.
