IT and telecoms Higher Level Apprenticeships launched
An Open University and Capgemini UK Higher Apprentices (HAs) project launched last week (17th April) has already been so successful that it is expanding. The London launch event introduced the first intake of 32 Higher Apprentices (HAs) to the five-year training scheme that they will begin next month, on which they will study for The OU's IT Practice Honours Degree while working at international IT services company Capgemini UK.

HP launches Institute programme to increase IT skills
IT vendor HP has launched the HP Institute, an academic partnership programme designed to provide students with business-ready IT skills. HP will work with schools, colleges and universities across the UK to deliver the courses, aiming to improve the IT skills of over 20,000 people over the next four years.

Leadership development is top L&D priority, says survey
Leadership development is the top priority for L&D teams over the next 12 months, according to a new survey from Video Arts. The survey asked 417 Learning & Development professionals about the training they provide, how it is delivered and their plans for the future.

Barnardo's wins Charity Learning Award
UK children's charity Barnardo's has won the trophy for the Best Overall e-Learning Programme at the Charity Learning Consortium's Charity Learning Awards. The judges said they were particularly impressed with the breadth of learning technologies Barnardo's has embraced, the innovative approach taken, and the organisation's dedication to supporting its e-learners.

Learning content company Video Arts has launched a new library of business, leadership, soft skills and desktop computing learning assets that includes 9,500 video training clips, e-learning courses, workshop resources and digital books.

Global Knowledge opens new training centre in Leeds
IT and business skills provider Global Knowledge has opened a new training centre in Leeds. The new centre will offer a range of courses specialising in Cisco, Citrix, Microsoft and VMware certifications. It will also host a variety of events focusing on service and project management.

Office support workers vital to business growth, says survey
According to a survey from recruitment company Hays, almost 80% of employers say office support workers provide essential support and are the backbone of the organisation. The majority of employers (85%) report that they will require office support workers with a greater variety of skills in the future.

250,000 people online with UK online centres
Earlier this month the 250,000th person got online in a UK online centre, putting the organisation a quarter of the way to its one million target. UK online centres pledged in April 2010 to get an extra one million people using computers and the Internet by 2013.

British Computer Society signs agreement for electronic testing
The British Computer Society (BCS) has signed a three year agreement with Pearson VUE. The agreement means that candidates for Foundation Certificates in Software Testing (FCSWT), Business Analysis (FCBA), Systems Design (FCSD) and ISO20k, can now take electronic tests via a network of over 5000 testing centres.
